Ukraine’s Drone Forces Hit 102 Russian Targets, Expose Depth of Rear-Area Vulnerability

Over a 48‑hour period from 6 to 7 August, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces say they hit 102 Russian targets across what they describe as the enemy’s operational depth, a list that runs from an FSB base and energy infrastructure to elements of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ and air defenses. If even partly accurate, the campaign shows how drones have turned rear areas that once felt insulated into contested terrain.

According to the Ukrainian command, the target set included 10 energy nodes located in Russian-held territory, a base used by Russia’s Federal Security Service in occupied Kherson region, two fuel and ammunition depots, two radar complexes, a Buk surface-to-air missile system, locomotives, fuel tankers and mobile fire groups. They also report hitting three Shahed/Geran control relays and five communications centers. At sea, the statement lists six ships belonging to Russia’s so‑called shadow fleet in the Black and Azov seas, vessels Kyiv accuses of supporting the war effort outside normal commercial channels.

These claims are difficult to verify independently in real time, and Moscow has not publicly confirmed the scale of the damage. Still, the level of specificity and the breadth of target types are consistent with Ukraine’s growing use of long‑range drones and other stand‑off systems to attack Russian logistics and command infrastructure well beyond the front line. Ukrainian special services have separately said that, over the same 48 hours, they struck an FSB facility nicknamed “Benya House” in occupied Kherson, repair bases, a training ground, a material and technical support depot and additional energy infrastructure nodes.

For Russian soldiers and support personnel stationed in what were once considered safe rear positions, the psychological shift is stark. Fuel depot workers, railway crews shunting military cargo and technicians at radar sites now know they are within range of small teams operating hundreds of kilometers away. Families living near targeted depots or energy nodes face the risk of secondary explosions, fires and blackouts. On the Ukrainian side, drone operators and engineers far from the front bear the burden of keeping up a tempo of strikes that Kyiv hopes will ease pressure on infantry in the trenches.

Operationally, sustained attacks on energy and logistics nodes pose a cumulative threat to Russia’s capacity to move ammunition, fuel and reinforcements. Hitting locomotives and rail infrastructure can slow the flow of materiel to forward units. Damaging energy installations can disrupt power to industrial plants that produce weapons and to military bases themselves. Striking communications centers and Shahed control relays targets the nervous system that coordinates Russia’s own drone and missile operations.

The reported strikes on six “shadow fleet” vessels carry a different but related message. These ships, often operating under opaque ownership and flag structures, have become central to Russia’s efforts to move oil and other goods under sanctions. Making them a target, even in limited fashion, signals Kyiv’s intent to treat the economic machinery that funds the war as part of the battlespace. For crews on such vessels, the war no longer stops at the waterline.

Strategically, Ukraine’s deep‑strike campaign is an attempt to rebalance a battlefield where Russia still holds numerical advantages in manpower and artillery. By stretching Russian air defenses and forcing Moscow to divert resources to protect rail yards, ports and energy assets, Kyiv aims to make offensive operations costlier and defensive positions less stable. It also serves a political purpose: demonstrating to Russian elites and the public that backing the invasion carries risks far from the Donbas.

Drones have made geography smaller. Infrastructure that once seemed beyond reach of a country under attack can now be hit by relatively low‑cost systems guided by satellite imagery and open‑source intelligence.

The key variables to watch next are whether Russia can significantly harden its rear areas with more air defenses and camouflage, how quickly damaged energy and logistics nodes are repaired, and whether Ukraine can sustain the pace of complex, long‑range strikes amid its own resource constraints. Any confirmed hits on high‑value command sites or major oil export facilities, and any Russian retaliation against Ukrainian infrastructure in response, would signal that this contest over depth is entering a more dangerous phase.
