Europe’s Drone Race Intensifies as Five Firms Face Off in Loitering Munitions Trials

European defense planners are fast‑tracking loitering munitions with a competition this autumn in Portugal that will pit five firms’ combat drones against the same conditions. The trials show how the Ukraine war has pushed Europe to turn lessons from the battlefield into procurement decisions that will shape how its armies fight in the next decade.

Europe is moving to close its drone gap with a focused contest that will put loitering munitions from five companies through the same paces at a Portuguese test range this autumn, turning wartime improvisation into formal procurement.

The planned competition will see systems from German firm Helsing, Dutch company Destinus, Slovenia’s C‑Astral, Portugal’s UAVision and Greece’s Spirit Aeronautical Systems tested under identical conditions, according to information released on 7 August. The goal is to accelerate the development and selection of combat‑ready loitering munitions—drones that can orbit over a battlefield before diving onto targets—that European forces increasingly see as essential.

For soldiers on future European front lines, the outcome will be felt in how they find, fix and strike enemy positions. Loitering munitions can give small units their own precision strike capability without waiting for artillery or air support, but they also require robust training, reliable communications links and doctrines that prevent friendly‑fire or civilian harm. The drones showcased in Portugal will be judged not only on range and payload, but on how intuitively they can be used by conscripts and reservists under stress.

The push is driven by hard lessons from Ukraine, where both Russian and Ukrainian forces have turned consumer drones and purpose‑built loitering systems into cheap, flexible killers of armor, artillery and supply convoys. European militaries that once treated such systems as niche are now under pressure to field large numbers of interoperable drones that can survive in contested electromagnetic environments and tie into NATO command networks.

Industrial stakes are high as well. For smaller defense firms in Slovenia, Portugal and Greece, success in the trials could open doors to multi‑country orders, joint ventures and integration into larger weapons packages. For Germany and the Netherlands, already central to Europe’s defense industrial base, the contest is part of a broader effort to ensure that future drone fleets are built in Europe rather than imported wholesale from the United States, Israel or Turkey.

Strategically, the competition reflects a shift in how Europe thinks about deterrence and firepower. Rather than relying solely on a limited number of high‑end aircraft and artillery pieces, planners are looking at swarms of expendable systems that can saturate defenses, complicate an adversary’s planning and keep pressure on logistics nodes deep behind the front. That in turn raises questions about stockpiles of munitions, electronic warfare resilience and rules of engagement in densely populated areas.

The trials also place Europe in a crowded global race. Countries from Iran to China and the United States are investing in loitering munitions, each with different export policies and battlefield experiences. European buyers want systems that can integrate cleanly with NATO’s communications and targeting standards, but they also want to avoid dependence on suppliers who may withhold technology or support in a crisis.

The most telling signals to watch will be which capabilities European defense ministries prioritize in the Portuguese trials: endurance versus speed, autonomy versus human control, explosive payloads versus sensor packages. The contracts that follow will indicate how quickly European armies plan to scale up their use of loitering munitions—and how seriously they are preparing for a future in which cheap, smart drones become as ubiquitous on the battlefield as rifles and radios.
