Ukraine’s Deep Drone Strike on Major Russian Refinery Exposes New Energy Vulnerability

Ukraine’s overnight long‑range drone attack on the Slavneft‑YANOS plant in Yaroslavl again shows that Russia’s core industrial assets are now within practical range of Ukrainian strikes.

Ukraine’s military intelligence service said its Active Operations Department, working with other elements of the country’s defense forces, struck the Yaroslavl refinery overnight using FP‑1 long‑range drones. The plant, located northeast of Moscow, can process up to 15 million tonnes of oil annually and is one of the five largest refineries in Russia, supplying fuel to central and northwestern regions including the capital. Ukrainian officials said the attack triggered a large fire and that the facility has been hit at least six times in 2026. The Yaroslavl strike is the public face of a broader shift: Ukraine is turning cheap, long‑range drones into tools for strategic warfare against Russian depth, while simultaneously working on indigenous ballistic systems. Kyiv has confirmed that its FP‑7 ground‑attack ballistic missile has completed around 15 test launches and is being codified by the Defense Ministry, with the designer aiming for first combat use in early autumn 2026. A larger FP‑9, reportedly designed to reach targets as far as Moscow, is expected to begin combat testing against pre‑selected sites.
