Patriot Shortage Puts Kyiv in the Crosshairs as Russia Ramps Ballistic Missile Use
Ukraine’s Air Force says it could not intercept a single Russian missile over Kyiv overnight because its Patriot interceptors are exhausted, even as Russia fired at least 30 missiles and more than 100 drones at the region. The gap gives Moscow a rare opening to lean on ballistic and advanced cruise missiles, raising the stakes of Western resupply decisions and the risk to millions of civilians.
Ukraine’s last line of high-end air defense around its capital has, for now, gone silent. The Ukrainian Air Force acknowledged on 5 August that it failed to shoot down a single Russian missile overnight, attributing the gap to a complete lack of available Patriot interceptor missiles. The admission comes as Russia leans harder on ballistic and advanced cruise systems in its campaign against Kyiv, betting that quantity and speed can overwhelm – or simply outlast – Ukraine’s defenses.
According to Ukrainian military reporting, Russia launched at least 30 missiles at the Kyiv region in the overnight hours of 4–5 August, alongside 115 attack drones. The missile package included Iskander‑M ballistic missiles and what Ukrainian sources described as Zircon and Oniks systems, which fly at high speed and are significantly more difficult to intercept than slower cruise missiles or drones. Ukrainian air defenses were able to shoot down 98 of the 115 drones, but none of the 28 ballistic and 4 cruise missiles, by their own tally.
The human cost was immediate. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least 15 civilians were killed and 47 injured in Kyiv city and Kyiv Oblast. Emergency services said 14 people died and 27 were wounded in the wider region alone, with strikes causing large fires and structural damage in three districts. Beyond the direct hits on warehouses and industrial facilities, debris and blast waves damaged surrounding areas, and rail officials reported major disruptions to suburban train traffic around the capital.
Patriot systems, supplied by Western partners, have been central to Ukraine’s ability to shield key cities and infrastructure from Russia’s growing use of ballistic missiles, including Iskander and air‑launched Kinzhal variants. Unlike many of Ukraine’s legacy Soviet‑designed systems, Patriot batteries are designed to counter high‑speed, high‑altitude threats. The Air Force’s acknowledgment that it has run out of Patriot interceptors around Kyiv is unusual both in its candor and its timing, signaling a vulnerability that Moscow is likely to try to exploit.
For civilians living under the flight paths of these missiles, the difference is not technical but visceral. When Patriot batteries are stocked and cued, air‑raid sirens are followed, at least sometimes, by the distant booms of interceptions and the sight of debris falling short of targets. Patriots are expensive and finite, and they are also critical to the air defenses of NATO countries themselves. Each decision to send additional interceptors to Ukraine forces Western planners to weigh their own deterrence needs against Kyiv’s immediate survival. The latest barrage shows how quickly Russia can turn any perceived gap into an opportunity to cause political and psychological damage.
The shift also encourages Russia to structure its strikes around Ukraine’s perceived weak points. If drones and slower missiles are more likely to be intercepted, planners in Moscow have an incentive to allocate more ballistic systems or hypersonic‑class weapons to high‑value targets such as power plants, command nodes, and major urban centers. The cost to Russia is higher – these missiles are not cheap – but the payoff in terms of damage and pressure on Ukraine and its allies may justify the expenditure.
In practical terms, the Patriot gap means that every shipment of new interceptors, whether from the United States or European partners, is not just an act of support but a decision about where to accept greater risk.
