Ukraine’s Radar Blitz on Krasnodar Air Defenses Puts Russia’s Skies Under New Strain

Ukrainian special operators say they have taken out a TOR-M2 system and at least seven Russian military radars in a single sweep across Russia’s Krasnodar region. The operation chips away at Moscow’s early-warning shield over the Black and Azov Seas, giving Ukraine more room for long-range strikes and forcing Russia into hard choices about how to defend its own territory.

A Ukrainian operation that claims to have knocked out a TOR-M2 air-defense system and multiple key radar sites across Russia’s Krasnodar region is putting fresh strain on Moscow’s ability to see and intercept threats over its own territory. The reported sweep, if confirmed in full, suggests Kyiv is moving beyond isolated deep strikes toward systematic efforts to peel back layers of Russia’s air-defense architecture.

Ukraine’s 1st Separate Special Operations Center said on 2 August that its forces had hit an array of Russian air-defense assets, including a TOR-M2 surface-to-air missile system near the town of Yeisk and a series of long-range and specialized radars: NEBO-S and NEBO-U near Yeisk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, a GAMMA-S1M near Yeisk, a NEBO-SV near Yeisk, a KASTA-2E2 near Kamyshevatskaya, and a “37T” radar near Prigibsk. Russian authorities have not issued a comprehensive public response or detailed damage assessment, leaving much of the picture based on Ukrainian accounts and imagery shared online.

The targeted systems are part of the network Russia relies on to detect, track and engage aircraft and incoming missiles over the Black and Azov Seas and adjacent land corridors. Long-range radars such as the NEBO family can feed data to air-defense batteries and command posts, giving Russian operators the time needed to launch interceptors or scramble fighter jets. Disabling even a subset of these sensors creates blind spots and reaction gaps that Ukraine can exploit with drones and cruise missiles.

For Russian air-defense crews and commanders, the loss or degradation of these assets increases operational risk overnight. Units that have grown used to working with overlapping sensor coverage may suddenly find themselves responsible for larger sectors with fewer tools, forcing them to rely on more mobile and shorter-range systems that can be more easily overwhelmed. The psychological effect also matters: knowing that static radar positions have been located and struck makes every antenna, command cabin and generator feel more vulnerable.

On the Ukrainian side, the immediate beneficiaries of such a strike are drone operators and long-range fires planners. Reduced radar coverage can open windows for attack drones to slip through, for anti-ship missiles to get closer to coastal bases, or for precision weapons to reach logistics and command hubs previously protected by layered defenses. Each successful hit on a radar or SAM system erodes Russia’s deterrent posture and increases the return on Ukraine’s investment in long-range strike capabilities provided by Western partners and domestic industry.

Strategically, the pattern fits a wider trend in the war: a contest not only of firepower but of sensing and counter-sensing. Russia has deployed extensive radar coverage to detect Ukrainian aircraft and missiles, while Ukraine has developed tactics and technologies—often using small, cheap drones—to locate, target and neutralize those sensors. The Krasnodar operation accelerates that dynamic, shifting the battleground further into Russia’s rear and challenging Moscow’s claim to airspace dominance near its own coastline.

The broader risk is that as Russia’s rear-area defenses are weakened, it may respond by concentrating more high-end systems deep inside its territory, potentially exposing other fronts or occupied Ukrainian regions to thinner coverage. Alternatively, Moscow could escalate with larger or more indiscriminate strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure to signal that attacks on its radar network carry a price for Ukrainian civilians.

The key indicators to monitor now are satellite and open-source observations of whether damaged radar sites are repaired or replaced, any redeployment of Russian air-defense systems from the front to the Krasnodar and Black Sea regions, and changes in the success rate of Ukrainian long-range strikes. If Ukraine can repeatedly blind sections of Russia’s early-warning network, it will not only change the tactical map but also force a strategic rethink in Moscow about how to protect its own skies in a protracted war.
