Ukraine Targets Russian Air Defenses in Kuban, Testing the Shield Over the Black Sea Front

Ukrainian special units released footage of strikes on multiple Russian air-defense radars and a Tor-M2 system across the Kuban and Krasnodar regions, including near Yeysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk. The attacks seek to punch holes in Russia’s protective shield over key airbases, logistics hubs, and launch sites facing Ukraine and the Black Sea.

Ukraine is opening a quieter but strategically significant front against Russia’s war machine: the radars and launchers meant to keep its own skies secure. On 2 August, a Ukrainian special unit publicized strikes on a cluster of Russian air-defense assets across the Kuban and Krasnodar regions, in a bid to thin out the shield that guards critical bases and coastal infrastructure.

Fighters from Ukraine’s 1st Separate Special Purpose Center released video showing attacks on what they identified as Russian air-defense elements near several settlements in southern Russia. Targets listed included a Tor‑M2 surface-to-air missile system and multiple radar stations—Nebo‑S, Nebo‑U, Gamma‑S1M, Nebo‑SV, and two Kasta‑2E2 units—located in and around the town of Yeysk, as well as the settlements of Primorsko‑Akhtarsk, Kamyshevatskaya, Prigibsky, and Shabelskoye. Ukrainian sources did not specify the exact timing of the strikes beyond indicating recent operations, and there was no immediate confirmation from Russian authorities regarding damage or casualties.

The geography matters. Yeysk and Primorsko‑Akhtarsk sit on Russia’s Black Sea and Sea of Azov littoral, hosting airfields, logistics hubs, and assets tied to Moscow’s wider campaign against Ukraine. By going after the radars and missile systems that protect these facilities, Ukrainian forces are trying to carve out limited windows where their own drones and potentially missiles can operate with less risk of interception. The assortment of radars cited—long-range 3D Nebo variants, Gamma, and Kasta systems—suggests a systematic attempt to degrade Russia’s ability to detect and track low-flying targets along a vital axis.

For Russian crews manning these systems, the strikes serve as a direct signal that they are no longer passive observers of a distant war but targets in their own right. Radar operators, who traditionally work behind the front, now face the prospect that their radar signature could draw Ukrainian fire. That changes how and when equipment is powered up, how often systems are displaced, and how long crews can maintain continuous coverage over high-priority zones.

At the operational level, even partial degradation of air-defense networks can complicate Russia’s ability to defend critical infrastructure, including airbases from which it launches strikes into Ukraine and ports and logistics centers supporting the Black Sea Fleet. Knocking out or damaging a radar might force Russia to fill coverage gaps with older or less capable systems, accept blind spots, or reallocate assets from other regions, weakening the layered defense Moscow has built across its southern military district.

Strategically, Ukraine’s focus on air-defense nodes in Kuban and Krasnodar dovetails with its broader deep-strike campaign against refineries, military airfields, and logistics depots inside Russia. Each successful hit on a radar or Tor launcher marginally increases the chances of future strikes penetrating deeper into Russian territory, from the Volga energy belt to coastal infrastructure. It also signals to Moscow that keeping its offensive air war going over Ukraine carries a price not only in aircraft losses but in the erosion of the protective bubble around its own rear.

The key insight is that in a long-range drone war, the radars and launchers behind the front are as much a front line as any trench; the side that can steadily attrit the other’s sensors and interceptors buys more freedom of movement for every subsequent strike package.

Attention will now turn to satellite imagery, social media footage, and any Russian reporting that might corroborate the scale of damage to these air-defense sites. Observers will be watching for changes in Russia’s air activity from Yeysk and Primorsko‑Akhtarsk, evidence of new air-defense deployments around key southern bases, and whether Ukraine can sustain a campaign against such high‑value enablers without exhausting its own limited stocks of precision munitions.
