In footage and descriptions circulated on 2 August, fighters from Ukraine’s 1st Special Purpose Center of the State Border Service detailed attacks on a Tor‑M2 surface-to-air missile system and an array of radar stations in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai. The reported targets included a Tor‑M2 in the vicinity of Yeysk, various “Nebo‑S,” “Nebo‑U,” and “Nebo‑SV” radar systems near Yeysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as “Gamma‑S1M,” “Kasta‑2E2,” and “37T” radars across a string of localities including Kamyshevatskaya, Shabelskoye, and Prigibsky. Ukrainian sources presented the strikes as successful, though independent confirmation of damage was not immediately available.

For Russian crews manning these systems, the attacks are a stark message that their equipment is not just watching the war—it is now a primary target. Radar operators typically work from locations calibrated for coverage rather than survivability, often assuming that being on Russian soil confers a degree of safety. If Ukrainian forces can repeatedly reach these sites, either through drones, missiles, or other long-range means, the nature of rear-area duty changes: high-value, high-visibility installations become points of vulnerability, not just surveillance.

Yeysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk sit near routes used by Russian aircraft striking Ukraine and by Russian air defense trying to intercept Ukrainian drones. By pushing the fight to these nodes, Ukraine is not simply seeking isolated kills; it is attempting to reshape the geometry of Russia’s air-defense umbrella over a strategic region.

This activity fits into a broader Ukrainian strategy of deep strikes designed to strain Russian air defenses across vast territory. In the same 24-hour window, Ukrainian-linked channels reported drones hitting a Saratov refinery and Wildberries warehouse in Samara, while Russian sources claimed to have shot down or suppressed thousands of Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the past week. When sensors are under attack and interceptors are firing nightly, sustaining an effective, layered shield becomes more difficult and more expensive.

A key insight from the Kuban strikes is that in modern conflict, the radars and command nodes that sit behind the missile launchers are as contested as the frontline itself. When those eyes and ears are blinded, even temporarily, the entire defensive architecture around them has to adapt, accept more risk, or contract its coverage.

What bears close watching next is whether subsequent Ukrainian operations exploit any perceived gaps—through additional drone incursions into southern Russia, increased activity over the Black Sea, or attempts to hit high-value bases under this radar umbrella.
