New Russian Rassvet Satellites Strengthen Drone War over Ukraine, Exposing a Growing Tech Gap

Russia’s new Rassvet satellite constellation now provides at least two stable daily communication windows over Ukraine, reportedly long enough to support naval drones and long-range strike UAVs. The network signals Moscow’s effort to harden its command links in the skies as the drone war intensifies, raising pressure on Ukrainian forces and their Western backers to adapt.

Russia is quietly bolstering its war over Ukraine not just with artillery and armor, but with a growing presence in orbit. A new Rassvet satellite constellation, launched in March, now provides at least two stable communication windows over Ukraine each day, each lasting more than an hour, according to Ukrainian defense observers. Twelve of the 16 satellites launched have reportedly reached working orbit, giving Russian forces a fresh layer of secure connectivity.

The constellation’s advertised capabilities may sound technical, but their battlefield implications are concrete. With multiple satellites passing over Ukraine on predictable schedules, Russian commanders can count on extended periods in which unmanned systems and dispersed units can exchange data without relying solely on vulnerable ground relays and line-of-sight links. Ukrainian analysts say the Rassvet network could theoretically support communications and control for naval drones, long-range strike UAVs, and reconnaissance platforms operating at distance from traditional command posts.

For Ukrainian troops on the ground and sailors in the Black Sea, this translates into drones that are harder to isolate and missions that can be planned and retargeted with more confidence. Naval drones probing Ukrainian defenses or threatening shipping lanes can stay in closer contact with operators, potentially adjusting courses in response to new intelligence. Long-range UAVs carrying explosives deeper into Ukrainian territory can be monitored and redirected if air defenses shift or new targets emerge.

The human impact is measured in increased tempo and precision of attacks. When strike drones can be controlled across longer distances and more reliably, ammunition depots, logistics hubs and frontline positions face a higher risk of being located and hit. Ukrainian air-defense crews, already stretched to deal with massed salvos of missiles and cheap attack drones, must now contend with adversary systems guided by space-based communication backbones designed to be less susceptible to jamming and disruption.

Operationally, the Rassvet deployment represents a significant investment in sovereign wartime infrastructure. By building out its own communications constellation, Moscow reduces its dependence on older satellites and limited ground networks, while gaining redundancy against Western efforts to disrupt its command-and-control. It also signals that Russia intends to sustain a high-tech form of warfare over Ukraine, not just a grinding artillery duel.

Strategically, the constellation points to an emerging race in the militarization of low Earth orbit. Ukraine has benefited from commercial satellite services and Western-provided space-based intelligence, but Russia’s Rassvet system is purpose-built for its own military use. The more Moscow can route drone command links, targeting data and encrypted communications through its own satellites, the harder it becomes for Kyiv and its partners to see, jam or sever those connections.

This shift also complicates Western export-control and sanction strategies. While drones, chips and electronic components can be tracked and restricted on the ground, space infrastructure is a different category: once launched, satellites are harder to touch without overt anti-satellite operations that most states still see as escalatory. The result is an asymmetric environment in which Russia can try to insulate key parts of its war effort from some of the pressure that has constrained its access to advanced imports.

The memorable lesson is that Ukraine’s battlefield is now layered vertically as well as horizontally: trenches and towns below, drones and missiles in the air, and constellations like Rassvet providing the unseen threads that tie them together. Signals to monitor going forward include any documented changes in the range and coordination of Russian naval and aerial drones, evidence of Ukrainian or Western attempts to interfere with Rassvet links, and announcements from Kyiv or its partners about their own investments in resilient, military-grade space communications.
