Russia is moving to hardwire unmanned systems into its blue-water navy, creating what it calls its first regiment of naval drones and planning to replicate the model in the Pacific as early as next year. The step takes technologies that have been experimental or ad hoc in many fleets and turns them into a formal operational unit, signaling that Moscow expects future sea power contests to be fought as much by robots as by crewed hulls.

Adm. Alexander Moiseyev, commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, told domestic media that the Northern Fleet already fields a regiment equipped with unmanned surface and underwater vehicles. Details on its exact composition and capabilities were sparse in the available reporting, but the framing — a regiment, not a test detachment — suggests a sizable, structured force. Moiseyev added that the navy plans to stand up a similar unit for the Pacific Fleet next year.

Strategically, a regimented approach to naval drones suggests that Russia wants to field these systems at scale, not just as niche tools.
