Mass Drone Strikes Test Russia’s Air Defenses and Energy Grid Deep Inside the Country

A wave of more than 250 drones targeted Crimea, Russia’s border regions and airspace toward the country’s center overnight, disrupting power in parts of the peninsula and forcing air defenses into sustained action. For Russian civilians and grid operators, the attacks turn the energy network into a contested front line — and show Ukraine is still probing deeper into Russian territory.

Russian-controlled territory and several regions inside Russia came under a large-scale drone barrage in the early hours of 25 July, in one of the heaviest reported overnight attacks on the country’s rear in recent weeks. The strikes again put civilian power networks and fuel infrastructure inside the war’s blast radius, and raised fresh questions about how long Russia can keep its air defenses stretched across such a wide front.

According to Russian regional authorities and military statements, air defenses engaged drones over Crimea, Sevastopol, the Belgorod and Rostov regions, and along routes through Bryansk and Belgorod toward central Russia. Local officials reported power supply disruptions in the Simferopol and Bakhchisaray districts of Crimea after the attack. In total, more than 250 unmanned aircraft were recorded over the last 24 hours, Russian side reporting that many were intercepted, though the full extent of damage on the ground is not yet clear.

Parallel reports from Ukrainian sources said Ukrainian drones struck warehouses and energy infrastructure in a mass attack on Russia’s Belgorod region, but did not provide detailed battle damage assessment. Those claims could not be independently verified, and Russian authorities have so far acknowledged only limited damage from falling debris and successful interceptions. What is clear is that drone flights were numerous enough to trigger air defense activity across multiple regions for hours overnight.

For residents in places like Belgorod, Bryansk or occupied Crimea, the campaign means another night of sirens, power cuts and uncertainty over whether the next wave will hit a transformer station or a fuel depot. Power workers and emergency crews are repeatedly pushed into rapid repair cycles, while warehouse and logistics operators in border regions must assume that storage sites are within range of Ukrainian strikes. Each successful hit on energy infrastructure has knock-on effects, from local blackouts to potential stresses on wider regional grids.

Militarily, the pressure is cumulative. Russian commanders must decide how to allocate finite air-defense assets across front-line areas in Ukraine, occupied territories such as Crimea, and critical sites deeper inside Russia proper. Every additional drone Russia has to track and intercept over Bryansk or Belgorod is a system not pointed toward the front, and each strike that touches energy or logistics facilities chips away at the predictability of Russia’s rear-area supply lines.

For Ukraine, long-range drone attacks have become a relatively low-cost way to reach beyond heavily defended front lines and impose a sense of vulnerability on Russian territory. Even when interception rates are high, the sheer volume of drones forces Russia to spend expensive interceptor missiles, disperse aircraft and radar, and harden infrastructure that was not originally built to withstand routine attacks. The risk is no longer theoretical for Russian civilians living hundreds of kilometers from the front; war has become a recurring presence in their skies and power sockets.

This latest wave also fits into a broader pattern of Ukraine targeting energy, industrial and military logistics nodes to gradually erode Russia’s capacity to sustain its offensive. Repeated strikes on energy infrastructure complicate efforts to stabilize power provision ahead of winter and add to Moscow’s fiscal and political burden at home.

Key signals to watch now are whether Russia adjusts its grid protection posture in Crimea and the border regions, whether new Russian air-defense systems are redeployed from the front to protect deep rear areas, and how openly Moscow acknowledges any damage to energy and storage facilities. A visible shift in its air-defense layout or fresh restrictions on public information about attacks inside Russia would both be indications that the drone campaign is forcing uncomfortable trade-offs.
