
Ukraine’s air defenses face massed overnight attack, revealing both strength and strain

According to Ukrainian military reporting on the morning of 23 July, Russia fired one Iskander‑M ballistic missile, five Kh‑59/69 air‑launched guided missiles, and 168 drones, including Shahed‑type loitering munitions, Gerbera, Italmas, and decoy platforms. Ukrainian air defenders say they shot down or electronically suppressed 156 of those targets, including two of the cruise‑type Kh‑59/69 missiles and 154 drones. At the same time, every impact site provides fresh evidence to Kyiv’s diplomats that the country still lacks enough layered defenses to reliably protect its grid, industry, and cities from Russia’s campaign of aerial pressure.
Strategically, Russia’s continued reliance on Shahed‑class drones and guided missiles reflects both its adaptation and its limits. Massed drone attacks allow Moscow to stretch Ukraine’s defenses at a lower cost than sustained use of cruise and ballistic missiles, stocks of which are harder and slower to replace. The use of decoys signals ongoing efforts to map radar coverage and trigger air defense fire prematurely, gathering data for future, more tailored strikes on critical infrastructure ahead of the coming autumn and winter seasons when energy systems are most vulnerable.
The pattern that emerges is wearing but clear: even when most inbound threats are intercepted, the psychological and economic effects of these barrages accumulate. Sleep is disrupted, industrial schedules are scrambled, and repair crews are put at risk trying to restore power and services between raids. Cities far from the front line are reminded that distance is no guarantee when drones can loiter and missiles travel at high speed.
In the coming days, observers will be watching for detailed damage assessments at the nine recorded impact sites, any change in the deployment of Ukrainian air defense assets, and fresh commitments or delays from Western capitals on supplying additional interceptor missiles and radar systems.
