UNICEF Reports Drone Strike on Sudan Market Killing Children, Exposing Civilians to Expanding Air War
A drone hit a crowded market in Ar Rahad, North Kordofan, killing children and adults in the latest sign that Sudan’s war is pulling civilians into an increasingly indiscriminate air campaign. As rival factions fight for territory, markets and streets are turning into strike zones for families with nowhere safe to go.
A drone strike on a market in central Sudan has pushed the country’s civilians deeper into the front line of a war that is becoming more lethal from the air, with children once again among the dead.
The attack on Ar Rahad, a town in North Kordofan state, struck a market on 20 July and killed at least two children, according to the UN children’s agency UNICEF. Six other children between six and 14 years old were injured, the agency said in a statement issued on 21 July. UNICEF added that four adults were also reportedly killed and more than 20 people wounded.
No armed group has publicly claimed responsibility for the strike, and there is no independent confirmation yet of which side launched the drone. Sudan’s conflict pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), both of which have access to a mix of artillery, air power and, increasingly, drones. Each side has accused the other of targeting civilians, while presenting its own strikes as aimed at military positions.
What is clear from the Ar Rahad attack is that ordinary people doing basic things — buying food, working market stalls, walking through town — are being put back in the blast radius of military strategy. The immediate questions to watch are whether there will be credible attribution for the Ar Rahad attack, whether either side acknowledges a role or pledges to limit drone use in populated areas, and how quickly humanitarian agencies can reach the wounded. Longer term, observers will be looking for signs of new air-defense capabilities, external suppliers of drones and munitions, and any diplomatic push to impose accountability for attacks on civilians from the air.
