Romania’s Defense Ministry said an aerial target entered Romanian airspace from Ukraine through northern Botoșani County on 24 September, remaining over Romanian territory for around four minutes before coming down in a wooded area near the town of Solca in Suceava County. No casualties or material damage were reported.

Authorities halted schooling in four localities as a precaution after the crash site was located near Solca, close to the Ukrainian border. The ministry did not publicly attribute the drone to any specific military.

The incursion came after what Russia’s Defense Ministry described as a massive overnight strike on Ukrainian military infrastructure, including defense industry facilities, telecommunications and logistics hubs, and vessels supporting Ukrainian forces in the Kyiv and Odesa regions. Ukrainian channels reported a large wave of drones transiting central and western parts of the country overnight, including routes through Chernihiv and Kyiv regions heading west.

Romanian air defenses responded by scrambling two F-16 fighter jets after the aerial target was detected crossing from Ukraine. Emergency services issued a RO-Alert warning for residents in Botoșani and Suceava counties at 06:26 local time.

In a separate incident the same morning, two Spanish F-18s were scrambled after aerial targets were detected over Ukrainian territory north of Chilia Veche, another sensitive stretch of the border near the Danube delta. Another RO-Alert was issued for the area.

For residents of border communities such as those around Solca, these alerts mean concrete disruptions: keeping children at home, living with the risk of debris, and waiting for military engineers to secure crash sites that might contain unexploded components.

On the military side, each airspace violation forces Romania’s air force to launch intercept missions and refine how it responds to unmanned aircraft near its borders.
