The BRAVE1 defence‑technology initiative says AI‑guided drone strikes have increased tenfold since the start of 2026. Working with Ukraine’s Defence Ministry, BRAVE1 tested autonomous guidance modules on multirotor drones carrying at least 2 kilograms of explosives. To qualify, systems had to lock onto a designated target from more than 500 metres away and achieve at least two successful hits out of three attempts without pilot input in the final phase of flight. Six of the seven participating companies met the standard and received procurement contracts.

These capabilities mean more of Ukraine’s attack drones can be launched toward an area and then use onboard sensors and algorithms to find and hit specific targets even if communications are disrupted. That reduces reliance on continuous remote control and helps drones operate in areas where electronic warfare is intense.

For soldiers and logistics units on both sides, such systems make small, relatively inexpensive drones harder to evade or neutralise, reinforcing their role in striking vehicles, artillery and field positions.
